Isabgol is the seed husk of the plant called Plantago Ovata. It is also called “blonde psyllium” in English. Psyllium is helpful as a laxative.
The plant is mainly cultivated in cool and dry places as the seed husk has water-absorbing properties. It is grown worldwide but native to West Asia, predominantly India and Pakistan. It grows as a wild crop in the southwest US.
Isabgol contains 6.83% moisture, 0.94% protein, 4.07% ash and 84.98% of total carbohydrates. The oil from plantago seeds had a high percentage of linoleic acid (40.6%) and oleic acid (39.1%) and a minor proportion of linolenic acid (6.9%).
