Isabgol

Isabgol is a rich source of fibres. Isabgol is beneficial in the management of constipation. Isabgol also has the ability to absorb and retain water. This adds bulk to the stool and makes the stool soft and easy to pass out.

Isabgol can be mixed with curds to treat diarrhea and acid reflux, regulate digestive system from irritable bowel syndrome, and relieve hemorrhoid pain.

Isabgol is the seed husk of the plant called Plantago Ovata. It is also called “blonde psyllium” in English. Psyllium is helpful as a laxative.

The plant is mainly cultivated in cool and dry places as the seed husk has water-absorbing properties. It is grown worldwide but native to West Asia, predominantly India and Pakistan. It grows as a wild crop in the southwest US.

Isabgol contains 6.83% moisture, 0.94% protein, 4.07% ash and 84.98% of total carbohydrates. The oil from plantago seeds had a high percentage of linoleic acid (40.6%) and oleic acid (39.1%) and a minor proportion of linolenic acid (6.9%).
